Situated in Northland, Whangarei is just 160kms north of Auckland and is considered to be is the largest urban centre in the Northland region and is the principal commercial centre.

The Whangarei District covers the south eastern part of the region that is known as Northland. It extends from Langs Beach at the southern end of Bream Bay to Bland Bay further north, a distance of just under 100km. This stretch of coast is dotted with offshore islands such as Poor Knights and Hen and Chickens group, where terrestrial and marine reserves conserve unique flora and fauna, warm tropical currents bring unusual aquatic visitors.

Getting out to the Bay of Islands you are likely to encounter an array of sea birds, dolphins, surface feeding schools of fish and possibly a pod of whales. Daily dive and sightseeing trips depart from Tutukaka for the Poor Knights Islands, once described by Jacques Cousteau as one of the World’s top 10 dive sites. Explore underwater caves, swimming with giant stingrays or just snorkeling about, the 'Poor Knights' have plenty to experience.

Swimming, kayaking, surfing and board-riding are favourites on the open ocean beaches of Whangarei, along with snorkeling and fossicking in the rock pools. Fishing is a popular attraction from both the shore and from boats. Charters for fishing, diving and sightseeing are available from the marinas and main boat ramps.

Along the coast you will find ancient, gnarly pohutukawa - a hardy growing tree with bright crimson flowers blooming in time for summer and are delightfully known by Kiwi's as the New Zealand Christmas tree.

Away from the coast there is plenty more to see and do - explore original rainforests where you will find giant kauri trees and a myriad of native flora and fauna. Throughout the district, you can explore these and other features at a leisurely pace from the many bush and coastal walkways. These range from easy strolls to extreme hikes and many feature stunning views of harbour and coastline.
