Foreign Licence Validations ::

PPL Conversion

To convert your Licence to a New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority endorsed PPL the applicant must:
  • Have a current pilot Licence (including medical) issued by an ICAO member state - for a list please click here
  • Meet the minimum requirements for a New Zealand PPL
  • Successfully complete a NZ Biennial Flight Review (BFR) to the minimum PPL standard, with an A or B Category Flight Instructor
A guideline for how many flying hours it would take to pass a BFR is only available after a check ride with an Instructor so they can assess your level and flying ability.

Once you have reached the required standard, a new licence will need to be issued and this can take up to 4 weeks by the CAA to process. In the meantime, you would only be able to fly dual, or as a student if authorised to do so by a flight instructor.

CPL Conversion

To convert your licence to a New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority endorsed CPL, the applicant must:
  • Have a current pilot licence (including medical) issued by an ICAO member state - for a list please click here
  • Apply to Aviation Service Ltd (ASL) for a licence conversion

ASL will check that an applicant’s qualifications and experience meet the required standards. Please see:
www.aviation.co.nz for contact details.

  • ASL may request that further flight training be carried out, or that exams must be taken and passed
  • Successfully complete a NZ CPL Law exam and an NZ CPL Flight Test with an ASL testing officer

If you do not have an ICAO Member endorsed Licence, the process may take far longer and be more involved.

Each country will be different, so it may pay to check before leaving your home country.
